A LaGrange Township couple, Joyce Summers and Clarence Robinson, pleaded not guilty to two felony counts of child endangering. The abuse allegedly included locking two teen girls in stifling rooms with buckets for toilets and forcing them to hold 20-pound weights for up to an hour. Summers adopted the girls in 1996 and Robinson married Summers two years ago. Bond set at $30,000 each. The investigation began after a girl escaped a room while stealing food.
Residents favored Ely Square over Gateway Park by six votes in a reader survey conducted May 22 to June 1. Of 192 responses, 48 percent backed Ely Square, 45 percent backed Gateway Park, and 7 percent suggested other ideas. Memorial committee plans must be submitted to city council by September with construction targeted for Memorial Day 2005 and the wall opening by Memorial Day 2006.
Oberlin’s Splash Zone opens to the public as Lorain County pools begin summer operations. Aquatics manager Lori Johnson and a 41 member staff cleaned the outdoor facility, added evening lessons and kayaking classes, while nearby pools in Lorain Amherst and Elyria also prepare to open. Johnson expects steady attendance after school ends.
