Stump the Ump ends with runner rule dispute
Reader John Verbeck asks about a play in which Bill Jones oversteps the plate and sits in the dugout after Joe Smith draws a walk loading the bases. Braves catcher Jim Doe rules Jones out for leaving the field before the play ends, while the Giants argue the run counts since the walk forced Jones into scoring position. The umpire must determine whether a runner who leaves the field may not return until the play ends and whether the run can score before touching the plate.
