Photographer Elza Painter documented flood chaos as more than an inch of rain inundated West River Street, diving city streets basements and back yards. The related photo and story appear on Page 11.
Lorain County auditors estimate 1 985 000 will be available for general fund expenditures in 1958, up 157 240 from this year, pending revisions. A public hearing on the composite budget is scheduled for June 17 as departments file preliminary budgets. Also noted are 1 076 000 for the highway fund and 135 000 from Pleasant View funding, with additional 1958 budgets listed for several county offices and services.
Mrs. Elmira Hartman, 75, of Elyria Ohio, died after a two car collision south of Altoona at a three road intersection. Her son James Hartman drove, with his wife aboard. they were returning from Lime Ridge. The Hartman car ran a red light and struck a vehicle driven by Grace Walker of Altoona. Hartman death counted seventh fatality at the intersection in three years. Grace Walker and Hartmans suffered minor injuries. Hartman is survived by three sons and two daughters. Body sent to Pitcairn funeral home.

Senator Frank J Lausche of Ohio says he has no present plans to run for governor despite daily letters urging him to run. He states his present thoughts are to remain in the Senate while appreciating the expressed confidence.
A citywide study ordered after the worst flooding in years aims to locate storm water inflow to the sanitary sewer system. Mayor J. Grant Keys notes the storm sewer network functioned at full capacity but was overwhelmed by heavy rainfall. Basements flooded across streets with new storm sewers, while water continued to rise in some basements hours after rain stopped. He cites excessive system size and costs as limiting factors. The Supreme Court ruled that DuPont violated federal anti trust laws by holding working control of General Motors since 1918 when it acquired 23 percent of GM stock. The decision, with three justices recusing, sent the case back to district court for equitable relief in the public interest to eliminate effects of the acquisition.
London INS reports a Foreign Office spokesman criticizes Khrushchev’s call while recalling Soviet action to crush Hungarian freedom fighters last fall. He stresses a distinction between forces with elected governments and Soviet troops in Hungary, underscoring invasion concerns.

MINNEAPOLIS UP An Air Force captain soared to a record 18 miles into space in a balloon Sunday staying near that height for nearly two hours. Capt Joe Kittinger 28 of Holbrook N M ascended to 96 000 feet and reported Lake Michigan distant when ordered down by radio.
Scientists in Las Vegas studied scores of mice pigs and monkeys exposed to radiation at the Nevada proving grounds. The aim is to develop a practical shield to protect humans from prompt radiation during a nuclear detonation.
County commissioners heard nine annexation petitions this morning, seven aimed at Lorain and two toward South Amherst. The 2,100 acre Lorain industrial tract including the Ford site drew attention, while another large Black River Township proposal centers near Skyline Drive. South Amherst plans would redraw village lines and push limits along Route 113 toward Whiskeyville. Hearings are to be scheduled within 60 days, after a day-long review to align timing with surrounding Lorain boundaries.
