Japanese fortune tellers prey on gullible victims in Tokyo
Authorities note rising fraud by spiritual advisers as people surrender large sums after being told their spiritual powers are waning. A case linked to Koun no Hikari involved a hotel gathering in Kanagawa in 2005 where a fortune-teller urged a 70s woman to pay 1 million yen for prayers, later discounted to 730,000 yen. The following year another event prompted a 500,000 yen payment.
