Harvey S. Firestone Jr., longtime Firestone Tire and Rubber Co executive and son of the founder, died at his Akron home. He was 74, had led the firm as president and CEO, guided international expansion, and chaired the Firestone Foundation since 1948. He had been confined to a wheelchair since 1965 after a fall.

Masked gunmen end marathon hijacking in Argentina
Two masked hijackers ended a marathon airliner seizure in Argentina by jumping from the plane at Resistencia airport just before takeoff for Buenos Aires. Commander Hugo Molina said the men held the crew for more than 30 hours and escaped as the plane prepared to depart for its final leg. The incident began after a Mendoza to Asuncion route with a stop in Resistencia and a seven minute stopover.

Four men fined in Elyria for drinking and driving charges
In Elyria Municipal Court four men faced penalties for driving while under the influence and related offenses. James A. Buga of Elyria received 250 dollars fine, six month license suspension and three days in jail after a no contest plea. Martin G. Esper of Toledo paid 200 dollars fine plus costs, three days in jail, and six month license suspension. extra 50 dollars was suspended. Eugene Emerson of Elyria paid 250 dollars fine for fines tied to reckless operation and intoxication after a no contest plea. John D. Baumgardner of Amherst was fined 50 dollars for reckless operation and 50 dollars for intoxication after charges were reduced from DUI.
