Farmers and Ohio State University Extension describe varied crop progress in Lorain County with a dry sunny spell seen as crucial. Tim Malinich says once fields dry, activity should increase as planting advances and conditions improve.
Elyria Lorain County Children Services sent layoff notices to four employees due to losing about 1.2 million dollars in federal funding. The agency budget is about 18 million. Ten employees retire or will retire this summer and positions will go unfilled. The four job losses include a computer specialist, a case aide, and two file clerks with the last day June 24. Union leader Angie Martinez says layoffs are disappointing but necessary to balance the budget.
Elyria council rejects a fact finding report aimed at ending the two year stalemate with the local firefighters union. The 9 to 1 vote leaves talks unresolved and pushes for conciliator involvement to break the impasse.
Independent Tim Quinn, removed from the November ballot for voting in the May Democratic primary, is barred from running as a write-in for Elyria mayor. Lorain County Elections Director Paul Adams cites a 2011 rule tying write-in eligibility to previous candidacy or nomination filings in the same election. Quinn may pursue a legal challenge, arguing he voted in prior elections and did nothing wrong.
An international panel under WHO classified cell phones as possibly carcinogenic after reviewing studies. The group cites limited evidence linking mobile use to two brain tumor types and notes many uncertainties. Some experts say the ruling should not alter phone habits.
