Ohio court orders Vietnamese adoptee returned to birth mother
The Ohio 8th District Court of Appeals ruled that Nguyen Thi Hua, adopted in 1975 by an American couple, must be returned to her birth mother Lan Baker after finding the mother was coerced by Holt International Adoption Program. The ruling says the agency exploited wartime fears and that the child’s long-time U.S. guardians, the Scotts, were not at fault. Court signaled narrow, unlikely to affect other Vietnam adoptions.
