Elyria Catholic seniors honored at ninth annual assembly

At Elyria District Catholic High School an honor assembly recognized 235 seniors for scholarship and achievement. Awards included the Louis Rotunda trophy to Timothy Wagner, while Peggy Schmidt and Anthony Greszler led scholastic honors. Thirty-four were inducted into National Honor Society and staff and yearbook honors were announced. A class gift of curtains and remarks urged continued service. A bank robbery in Cleveland followed the school report.

Guilty Plea in Six Counts Leads to Jail Time for Lorain Man

Lorain resident William E. Sleeth pleaded guilty to six charges including resisting arrest and failure to stop. He received 20 days in county jail and 300 dollars in fines plus additional penalties for drunkenness disorderly conduct and driving with two licenses. The incident involved a collision with Ellen Gemmel’s car in Oberlin and a later hit and run linked by paint evidence. Lorain County deputies and Oberlin police reported slurs and racial epithets during the arrest and noted Sleeth’s Nevada and duplicate Ohio licenses.

Legal ruling awaits July on Elyria room dispute

A Lorain County Common Pleas Court case between Elyria and Elyria Township centers on a 12 by 43 foot first floor room in Elyria City Hall. Trustees have used the space since 1905 when the deed reserved it for township meetings. The city seeks eviction after a boundary change placed the room in Ely Township, now the town of Ely. Both sides must file statements by June 15 and briefs by July 15.

Indictments Target 34 OSU Students Over Campus Takeover

A Franklin County grand jury charged 34 Ohio State University students with unlawful detention conspiracy to abduct blackmail and menacing threats after the Black Student Union seized the campus admin building for about five hours on April 26 The NAACP said it will help defend the students Indicted come from Columbus Cincinnati Dayton Brooklyn N Y East Liverpool Uniondale N Y Fostoria and Cleveland with names including John Evans Jr and others in the group and several white demonstrators not charged.

Two hurt in Lorain motorcycle crash on Rt 2

Lorain woman Rose Gardner, 48, is in guarded condition at Lorain St Joseph Hospital with a cerebral concussion and head and finger cuts after a motorcycle collision on Rt 2 east of Amherst. Driver David Ray, 53, received treatment for a shoulder injury and was released. Police say a rear tire blew out causing the crash and a nail was found in the tire. No charges filed.

Tavern damage leads to fine

Mrs. Naomi Butler of Courtland Street Wellington was found guilty of malicious destruction of property and fined 100 dollars. Municipal Judge David R. Goldthorpe sentenced her to 10 days in jail but suspended the term on condition of good behavior for one year.

Earthquake Strikes Eastern Sicily Shaking Agrigento

A strong pre dawn quake registering five on the Mercalli scale hit eastern Sicily near Agrigento. Residents fled into the streets in panic and stayed outside for about four hours after the tremor.

Burton to lead Lorain County Joint Vocational School

Former New London School Superintendent William R. Burton is named superintendent of the proposed Lorain County Joint Vocational School District. He currently leads the Marion Area Joint Vocational-Technical School and has worked on plans for nearby county programs. Burton, a Ohio State University graduate and Korean War veteran, will relocate with his family once housing is secured. The district serves Amherst, Firelands, Keystone, Oberlin and Wellington, offering programs for 11th and 12th graders in agriculture, business, retail education, home economics and trade and industrial areas.

Great Lakes Boaters Die 50% More This Season

Rear Adm. Charles Tighe reports Great Lakes boating deaths rose 50 percent in the first two months of the 1968 season, with nine deaths per month versus six in 1967. He notes most victims lacked safety devices. Lake Erie accounted for ten of 18 April–May deaths.

Two Drivers Hurt In Vermilion Head On Crash

In Vermilion on Route 6 and 2 two men were hospitalized after a head on collision near the Holiday Inn Steakhouse. Fred J. Koviak 26 of Fuller Road Elyria suffered fractured ribs and possible skull fracture. Lyle H. Prittee 40 of Lorain had fractured ribs and both were listed in guarded condition. The crash occurred at 9 18 p m when Koviak unable to avoid a stopped left turning car crossed into the eastbound lane. The accident remains under investigation.

DeWitte Maddock Alive Contrary to Rumor

A relative says DeWitte Maddock of Hilliard Road Cuyahoga County is alive and well. The report in Russ Davies’ column about Maddock’s death is denied, noting his son Dean Maddock of North Ridgeville High School basketball fame. The senior Maddock is a known Elyria bowler.
