Seven student nurses graduated from the S. B. Johnson School of Nursing at Elyria Memorial Hospital. Diplomas and pins were handed to each nurse at commencement in Elks Hall as Dr. Paul B. Sears urged them to blend knowledge with common sense and good character for civic service.
Investigators investigated several Kaiser Court residences after an alleged burglar who stole a revolver four tents and a flashlight from the Finnegan home on Lodi street. Witnesses reported attempted entries at Wells and others, with a bundle of newspapers taken from Tracy’s porch and scattered.
The British steamship Monas Isle reported an S O S at 8 55 a m C E S T as she was shelled off Number 5 buoy in Dunkirk Channel France according to Mackay radio company.

Camp Iss-See-Kes of the Elyria Y M C A prepares for its annual open house from 1 to 5 p m to welcome visitors before the 1940 season opens next Saturday. The director and Leaders' Corps will guide tours of the Vermilion River camp on Route 113 to Henrietta Hill, then north two and a quarter miles.
Washington reports the Senate has confirmed Charles J. Sartor for the Elyria postmaster position. His appointment follows official action in Congress and ends months of consideration.

Accidents and violence during the four day Memorial Day weekend killed more than 200 people. Highway crashes led the tally with over 100 deaths, drowning accounted for 38, and states like California, Pennsylvania, and New York reported the highest fatalities.
A Lorain County common pleas court granted an injunction against the Bakery Tea Coffee and Yeast Drivers Union Local 52 and its leaders amid a strike at the J Spang Baking Company plant. The order bars unlawful interference with plant access deliveries employee duties and union pressure. Violent incidents were reported with a hammer thrown at a truck and a police car damaged as Elyria police provided protection.

Ladies of the church later served dinner to visitors.
Rome reports Italy orders all gasoline consuming vehicles off streets effective immediately. Only coke burning and official autos remain in use as Mussolini prepares to join Germany’s war effort. Traffic is cut by about ninety percent. evacuation plans for northern cities underway. Aboard the Manhattan, over 1,800 Americans booked passage.
Berlin reports the German high command says French resistance in northeast France has fallen in a major action around Lille with 26 000 prisoners taken. It claims progress against British forces near Dunkirk and reports sinking five Allied transports and damaging ships. The claim notes a repulsed Allied tank assault near Abbeville and a German counterattack gaining positions.
Allied forces evacuated nearly all divisions from Flanders evacuating perhaps 15 000 men after a historic withdrawal across the English Channel one division remained in the Dunkirk area behind a new water defense line Germans penetrated the water line and motorized units operated near a beach where British troops were to be evacuated.
