Roosevelt Aims for Talks to Ease Steel Textile Strikes
Washington June 1 Labor leaders recognize the administration will arbitrate the broad steel and textile dispute affecting nearly a million workers. President Roosevelt plans a personal read of the crisis after New York, likely to seek talks with the Iron and Steel Institute and union leaders to avert a strike. NRA chief Johnson shifts to crisis duty and meets textile and steel officials as unions threaten a 340000 worker walkout Monday unless NRA orders curb operations by 25 percent. Union conventions set for June 10 in Pittsburgh, with a June 16 strike vote if bargaining and recognition demands are unmet.
