Paul-Henri Spaak Dies in Brussels at 73

Paul-Henri Spaak, famed as Mr Europe, died of kidney failure at Brugmann hospital at age 73. A Belgian premier and foreign minister, he helped found NATO and the Common Market, presided over the UN General Assembly and EC/EEC bodies, and spent years shaping postwar European integration.

British troops and tanks swept Catholic barricades across Northern Ireland at dawn occupying IRA no go areas in Londonderry Belfast Portadown Lurgan Armagh Colisland and Dungannon. Eagleton to face McGovern on staying on ticket

Missouri Senator Thomas Eagleton plans to present his case to George McGovern tonight about remaining on the Democratic ticket after leaders urged him to withdraw. McGovern reserved final judgment, saying a decision might come from the meeting. Eagleton has faced questions since revealing past psychiatric treatment.

Polite Fives Rob Plaza Hotel Safe Deposit Boxes

A group of five well dressed armed robbers struck the Plaza Hotel in New York City around 4 a.m. They forced employees and guests into a reservations office, punched locks on boxes, and escaped in a tan station wagon with New Jersey plates. Detectives say eight boxes opened, with the total value unknown, and a similar theft at the Pierre earlier this year is cited.

Fire engulfed building injuring three at Sherwood Forest complex

C T reporter W John Feiler recalls guiding neighbors during a fire at a Georgetown Avenue apartment building. Flames consumed a second floor unit and spread to the hallway trapping residents on balconies. A woman was helped across a ledge and pulled to safety. About 200 gathered as windows screamed and people evacuated.
