Senate leaders worked to resolve the 8.5 billion foreign aid bill while discord over Spain and Yugoslavia intensified debate. Senators urged cuts, arbitration between foreign relations and armed services committees, and possible future requests.
Elyria Red Cross officials plan a local drive to raise 2000 dollars toward a 5 million dollar national flood relief program for Missouri Kansas Oklahoma and Illinois. The executive committee meets today at 4 pm to organize the campaign with contributions accepted at the Masonic Temple on Middle Avenue through the week.
Northeastern Ohio forecast for Cleveland area calls for fair skies and warmer temperatures. High today around 88 with partly cloudy conditions and a continued warm trend. Low tonight about 68 with pleasant but warm overnight. Market notes appear on page two.
Mrs Wayne Burdue formerly DeEtta Wilson of Elyria now in Tacoma with her young son Jimmy received news from her husband a chaplain in Korea. In a February letter he said he was being held captive in North Korea. The word came through the Prisoner of War Service out of China. Burdue was among five missing chaplains named on an honorary plaque unveiled in Tokyo Japan.
Pfe. Richard A. Youngblood, 22, son of Mr and Mrs Edward William Youngblood, was wounded on July 23 for the second time since his unit entered Korea. He previously suffered shrapnel wounds June 29, and has been in and out of action since arriving in Korea April 27. He married Donna Glover during a furlough and is reported by Red Cross to have received care in a Chungu hospital.
Representatives of striking inter city truck drivers and trucking officials were to meet today in Columbus to end a walkout that could cause a statewide tieup. The talks were called by Harry Gray of Toledo, a U S mediation commissioner, as the 6000 driver strike continued.
Washington The Army dismissed Brig. Gen. David J. Crawford from command at the Detroit arsenal for accepting favors from line contractors and using government material for his own needs. Secretary Pace ordered a formal reprimand and relief from command with Crawford to reimburse government materials used for pleasure boats and personal goods transport.
Washington officials warn industry must recruit 4.5 million defense workers over 18 months while maintaining civilian production. About 2 million to be found by end of 1951 and 2.5 million added in 1952. Flemming says 1 to 1.5 million civilians may shift to defense. employers must act as government offers no tight controls.
London reports Britain to reopen negotiations with Iran on oil. Foreign Secretary Morrison to announce a special mission to Tehran. W. Averell Harriman returns to Tehran after talks, with British agreement in principle to send the mission and a demand for a more reasonable stand on British personnel in oil fields.
UN forces continued pressure on a Communist stronghold north of Yanggi on the east central front for the fifth straight day. They attacked from three sides and a mountain peak assault yesterday yielded a capture. A briefing officer said 2,400 enemy troops were killed, wounded, or captured last week as Far East Air Forces targeted bases and aircraft in renewed operations amid armistice talks.
The summer program ended last Friday with over 100 high school students completing 40 three hour sessions begun after regular school. Many pursued advanced work through school arrangements. A staff change occurred when W L Vaughn fell ill. Clare Short and F A Dusthimer led thereafter. Grade classes closed July 20. 78 children finished courses, 41 from Elyria City schools and 37 from other systems.

Mayor Henry W. Ault attended the funeral service for Police Chief E. J. Stankard in Elyria and then flew to Columbus by chartered plane to join Governor Lausche at an 11 o’clock meeting. The session focused on organizing local coal stockpiles to ease winter transport if defense needs arise.
Western Berlin witnesses report the East German police seized an American jeep and two sedans with occupants about noon at the border between West and East Berlin. American authorities launched an immediate investigation.
Eight Polish military officers including four generals will be tried in Warsaw on charges of plotting to undermine the army's loyalty with backing from Western democracies. The group also includes three colonels and a naval lieutenant commander. Official press says they gained entry with support from Britain and the United States.
United Nations and Communist negotiators in Kaesong ended a 14th session with no progress beyond two points. Both sides agree to meet again tomorrow while insisting on their demands, as the Allies resist a 2,125 square mile withdrawal and a cease-fire line near the 38th parallel.
Dr. W. K. Brubaker has acquired the former St. Jude's church property at Cleveland Street and Abbe Road and plans to remodel the building for professional suites including internal medicine and cardiology by Dr. John Wierry. The site will also host a modern branch bank by Elyrian Savings and Trust Co and a new drug store by Arthur Hess, with ample parking and a planned commercial center to serve a developing eastern city district.
Lorain County Schools Superintendent A Gibbons announces the Lorain County Board of Education will meet in regular session Thursday at 8 30 p m. The gathering will be held at the superintendent's office located at 420 Third Street.
United Press reports Communists seek a cease fire price by restoring the prewar 48th parallel border and a 12 mile buffer zone. UN negotiators led by Gen. Ridgeway oppose a retreat, preferring to hold the front as is for military advantage. The 135 mile front crosses the peninsula from the Imjin river area toward Seoul with north of the parallel near Kaesong and the Ongjin peninsula.
Mr and Mrs Alex Osvelt of 5370 Bond Street Elyria receive word their son Corporal Albert Osvelt 23 has been wounded in action in Korea. The letter from the Office of Public Information says Cpl Osvelt joined in September 1949 and arrived in Korea about ten months ago. Parents last heard July 6 and were informed July 9 of his wounding with no further details since.
The Public Utilities Commission of Ohio announced they will return to Elyria on Thursday to resume the Elyria Telephone Co rate case rehearing. The hearing is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m.
