Hall of Fame trims Veterans Committee and voting rules
The Baseball Hall of Fame board cut the Veterans Committee size and the number of players it may consider. Ballots will be cast only by living Hall of Famers for players, while a 16 member panel will vote on managers and umpires. A BBWAA appointed panel will shrink 20th century candidates to 20, then a six member screening committee will pick five. Induction remains 75 percent.

Gwynn Ripken shine in Hall of Fame moment
Gwynn and Ripken, celebrated Hall of Fame inductees, embody baseball’s best while Barry Bonds faces scrutiny over steroids. Bonds’ pursuit of the home run record clashes with Selig’s pomp, and Ripken’s iron man memory mirrors a sport’s ideal ethos as fans and media watch Cooperstown and San Francisco.

Nationals lock up Young on $10 million extension
Dmitri Young signed a two year deal through 2009 for $5 million per season with a $6 million option in 2010. The contract hinges on plate appearances and signals a major turnaround for the All Star first baseman as Washington backs him amid lineup changes. The Astros acquired Ty Wigginton from Tampa Bay to bolster the infield while Tampa added Brian Shackelford and sent Shawn Camp down. Donnie Sadler faced a 50 game suspension for a drug of abuse in the minor leagues. Paul Lo Duca left a Mets game with a hamstring strain and Aaron Harang departed early with lower back soreness.
