Browns expansion fee nets big gains for NFL owners

Columnist Dan Coughlin says the expansion Browns will funnel at least 24 million into each owner's pocket from the franchise fee. The NFL owners meeting in Dallas also confirms a similar player stocking package to prior expansions as a nationwide owner search continues.

GM UAW end Flint strikes with tentative deal

GM and the United Auto Workers reached a tentative agreement to end strikes at two Flint parts plants, potentially saving over 2.2 billion in losses. Ratification votes were set for today, with employees expected to return to work by night. The pact covers Flint facilities and other threatened plants and includes a pledge for frequent top-level talks to resolve disputes.

GM to Drop UAW Lawsuit and Invest in Flint Plant

GM will withdraw its suit against the UAW over alleged illegal strikes in Flint Michigan and proceed with a planned 300 million investment in new equipment for the Flint Metal Center stamping plant. Local 659 aims to boost productivity by about 15 percent while preserving pegged rates at the engine cradle operation. Over 70,000 laid off and striking GM workers will receive lump sum holiday pay for missed days during the summer shutdown. Delco East and two Dayton brake plants are covered by no safe clauses into 1993 and 2000 respectively.

Lewinsky prepared to testify on Clinton cover up

Washington AP reports Monica Lewinsky is prepared to testify that she and President Clinton discussed concealing their alleged sexual relationship. Sources say she and Clinton talked about cover stories and a visit to see Betty Currie to explain her Oval Office trips. The talking points for Paula Jones are said to have been crafted by an outside figure. ABC News cited sources denying Linda Tripp, and the White House criticized Starr’s push of the points.

USS Kobe urges county to back Lake Shore loan

In Lorain, USS/Kobe Steel President George Babcoke asks county commissioners to back a Lake Shore Railway Association loan to restore the 26 mile Wellington to Lorain rail line. Lake Shore must sign with the Ohio Turnpike Commission by August 3 or the Route 58 interchange moves ahead. The turnpike needs about 1.2 million to cover interchange reconfiguration.

Voinovich backs new Grafton prison plan

Gov. George Voinovich remains supportive of a private prison in Grafton despite a mass escape from a Youngstown facility. A governor spokesman cited ongoing discussions with state AG Betty Montgomery as officials seek guidance on closing the Youngstown Northeast Ohio Correctional Center. By Tuesday five escapees had been recaptured, four of whom were convicted.
