Gym construction in Kent site sparks protests and arrests
Sixty-one demonstrators, part of the May 4th Coalition, were arrested as sheriffs and campus police cleared a line to allow $6 million gymnasium construction near the Kent State site where four students were killed in 1970. The Porterhouse Hotel on East Water Street in Sandusky, once hosting Charles Dickens as a guest, was gutted by a morning blaze. Fire officials said the center of the first floor was heavily involved, the roof soon collapsed, and two workers were treated for minor injuries as the Red Cross aided residents. The three story brick building, closed about a year, housed three men at the time of the fire.
