A 5 year old boy, Robert William Gechter, died of massive head injuries after being struck by a car on Pram Creek Drive in Columbia Township. The driver, Bobby Gene Halsted, 31, Olmsted Falls, was southbound on Phan Creek Drive when the bicycle rider was hit near his home. The crash occurred around 7:40 p.m. and the boy died at Memorial Hospital about an hour later. Witnesses say the car struck mail boxes before hitting the bike. witnesses also noted anger from residents over repeated driver complaints and inaction on undedicated streets.

Truck hits freight train injuring Avon Lake man
Av on Lake resident Archie Chester 68 was seriously injured when his pickup was struck from behind by a three engine Norfolk and Western freight train at Lear Road crossing. He was taken to Bayview Hospital with injuries to his penis and internal injuries. The truck’s engine was ripped free and parts scattered within 100 feet as the train, moving about 45 mph, struck then pushed the vehicle into a field. Chester wore a seat belt.

Elyria police investigate a shooting that struck 45 year old Mrs. John Cooper in the hip as seven bullets blasted into her West Avenue home around midnight.
