Key practices include pH 6 to 6.7, 300 to 400 pounds of fertilizer per acre, shallow disking, avoiding deep plowing to prevent erosion, and packing if conditions warrant. Band seeding in oats or oats with wheels improves germination and yields, with reported per acre outputs 214 to 12 tons in trials and comparisons to spring seeding showing favorable first crop results.
