Hughes Says He Lost 14 Millions on Huge Plane
Howard Hughes, in Culver City, asserts Senate probes will not uncover graft in his contracts and condemns the investigation as harming his reputation. He defends the XP-41 as the world’s best propeller driven aircraft and explains losses on the eight engined flying boat project as a government‑funded, purely research venture. He cites cost overruns, personal expense, and notes that a Kaiser designed idea was sold to the government while stressing the project’s wartime value and the government’s control to cut costs if needed.
