Prisoner Exchange Opens August 15 In Korea 1954

In Panmunjom the Communists agreed to start the exchange of war prisoners on August 5. About 3,313 Americans will be exchanged for more than 12,000 Allied captives seeking return to communism, with 74,000 Chinese and North Korean prisoners also slated. Maj. Gen. Blackshear M. Bryan led the armistice commission as teams prepared at Munsan for the operation named Little Switch and Freedom Village.

De Gasperi Resigns After Italian Chamber Vote

Dragging Lake For Body Of Drowned Youth

Lorain coastguardsmen dragged Lake Erie today to recover Richard Delk 17 who drowned Monday at Harmond's Beach near Lakeview Park. Relatives report he was visiting at 106 Washington Avenue Lorain after friends tried to save him as he went under.

Walters Named Bandmaster at Elyria High School

William J. Walters, former assistant bandmaster at Barberton High School since 1948, was hired by the Civic City Board of Education as bandmaster at Elyria High School and instructor of band music. A Ohio University graduate, he plans to complete a masters at Western Reserve University this summer after army service and a teaching stint in Lucas Schools in 1947.

Avon Hardware Robbery Nets Thieves $4000

Thieves entered Avon Hardware after 8 30 last night and carried off more than 4000 dollars in equipment, mainly guns. Store operator Joseph Forthofer said about 60 guns were taken. Sheriffs deputies continued the investigation today.

French Hit Rebels In Indochina

In Indochina near the Annam coast a large French assault attacked the Viet Minh held Joyless Route sector between Hue and Quang Tri. Some 11 900 French Union commandos landed to wipe out Viet Minh March Regiment No 95 forces as part of a regional offensive against Communist rebels. The operation follows earlier strikes including 8 000 men against Lang Son near the Chinese border as the drive broadens.

Elyrians Puzzled by Son’s Promotion Amid MIA Status

Mr. and Mrs. Hartsel O. Nixon of 2090 Grafton road received a July 21 1953 letter from Adj Gen William E. Bergin stating their son Cpl. William Herold Nixon has been promoted to Sergeant. Nixon enlisted in 1948 served in Korea with the transportation department and base command at Eighth Army. he was listed missing in action at Unsan after volunteering for front line duty with the First Cavalry Division.

Premature birth during London cinema intermission
