FHA requires more cooling insulation standards
A new FHA standard sets minimum insulation for air conditioned homes financed with FHA loans. Ceiling R13 is common, wall R13 to R19, and in warm masonry zones ceiling R19 or R24 may be required. Higher insulation boosts comfort and lowers energy costs, and may allow smaller cooling systems. The National Mineral Wool Insulation Association offers supplementary guidelines with R-19 or R-24 ceilings and R-13 walls.
