Wine growers optimistic as drought boosts grape quality
Growers in the Lake Erie region report ripening earlier than usual amid heat and dry conditions. Vintners like Bob Matus of Matus Winery anticipate a large 4000 gallon harvest with good grape quality and low insect and mold pressure. Experts cite potential for hybrids and European varietals, though frost hit some growers such as Lee Klingshirn who may not sell grape juice unless Concord grapes are purchased.
