UPI reports at 1 50 p m that U S scientists announced Explorer TV is in orbit crossing over Russian territory confirming successful satellite launch status and orbital insertion.
The Jupiter C rocket with Explorer IV on its tip launched from Cape Canaveral in an Army attempt to place a satellite in an orbit crossing Russia. The mission aimed to image radiation and radios from space as the Air Force prepared Explorer IV for orbital testing after a prior Thor failure. If successful, Explorer IV would cross Southern Russia on its first orbit, offsetting Soviet Sputnik II’s lead.
Bloodier fighting in Beirut near Al Khayad Hill leaves 14 dead and 12 wounded amid a lull in US Marines and paratroops involvement. Diplomats press for a quick settlement as Lebanon’s 66 member Parliament readies to meet to select a new president. Rebel leaders threaten boycott unless Chamoun and US forces exit first.
Moscow reports accuse Turkey of planning actions against Iraq within days. The Soviet note, delivered in Ankara, cites near Turkish frontier forces and says lack of full US agreement and opposition from Russia and allied states prevent the venture. Summit talks on the Middle East occur as Baghdad Pact members plan London meeting. Rumors claimed Jordan's King Hussein might justify a Turkish attack.
The Labor Department reported Friday that unemployment on jobless payrolls increased by 36,200 last week to 2,625,400. It marked the second consecutive weekly rise, attributed to layoffs from temporary plant shutdowns for summer vacations.

A 44 000 pound automobile stamping machine fell from a tractor trailer on Route 113 near the Brown Lipe Chapin plant at 6 55 PM delaying traffic for eight hours. Driver Edward R Krieg 31 of 374 Marseilles Ave said the load shifted breaking its chains and crushing the tractor. Motorist Harry Tarleton reported seeing it topple as he passed and avoided being crushed by steering into a driveway. Krieg faces a charge for operating a motor vehicle with an insecure load. Damage to the pavement is valued at about 350 with the truck and machinery damaged and removed by Kaplin Trucking Co. of Cleveland under contract with Frank P Papenbrook of Lorain. The route was diverted over Murray Ridge to Adelbert St Leke Ave while crews cleared the road.
Washington and Kwame Nkrumah issued a joint White House communique stating the United States aims to withdraw troops from Lebanon as soon as the United Nations can act to assure the independence and territorial integrity of the state. The two leaders agreed that UN action should guide a Middle East solution while preserving sovereignty and dignity.
John Ross, 33, a real estate dealer from Cleveland Heights, killed Russell Caputo, 39, a restaurant cook, after finding Caputo with his wife in their bedroom. Ross said he chased Caputo after a bar, then fired, ending in Caputo’s death in a neighbor’s yard as Ross fired again.
Eleanor Gooderham Acheson, 87, mother of former Secretary of State Dean Acheson, died Friday in Washington. Her death is reported by United Press International.
