Chief Stankard Dies After 41 Years as Elyria Police Chief
Police Chief Edward J. Stankard, head of the Elyria department for 41 years, died at Elyria Memorial Hospital at 10 30 a m after a gall bladder ailment and heart condition. Born June 22 1876 at Kimball Ohio he came to Elyria 50 years ago and was appointed chief on January 1 1910. He saw the force grow from eight to 33 with radio equipped cars. He was a civic leader and community worker respected for integrity and fairness. Continued on Page 2.

Injured Pfc Samuel Patania Dies After Auto Crash
Pfc. Samuel Patania 23 of Elyria died at Elyria Memorial Hospital after a Route 82 collision near Grafton. His friend Dominic Luppino survived. Patania, born in Elyria and a Elyria High School graduate, returned home July 14 en route to Camp Stoneman California. He had entered service January 12 and served at Ft. Knox and Ft. Sam Houston. He worked with his father in masonry.

UN and Communists Begin Kaesong Talks on Armistice Agenda
United Nations and Communist negotiators met in Kaesong to discuss an armistice agenda for Korea. A second meeting was set for 10 a.m. tomorrow as both sides seek a cease-fire framework. The five point agenda includes demarcation of a military line, cease-fire arrangements, POW handling, and supervisory body roles. Neither side predicts rapid progress.

UN Forces Beat Off Attacks By Reds
United Nations forces repelled two Communist probing attacks on the central front and ambushed a Red patrol west of Kumhwa. Four enemy soldiers were killed and the rest fled. another group was dispersed after a two hour fight. A UN task force bulldozed through a heavy mortar barrage above Korangpo on the western front and drove defenders from high ground in about ninety minutes.

Recreation Board Plans Long Range Program To Develop 43 Acre Tract
Elyria officials outline a ten year plan to create a modern outdoor recreation center on a 43 acre parcel north of West avenue Route 113 and west of Penfield avenue. Initial work will place one baseball and one softball diamond on about 15 acres, plowed and tilled for fall grass, likely ready for summer 1952 use. The blueprint includes tennis courts horseshoe pits shuffleboard wading pool roller and ice skating facilities picnic area playgrounds and a model airplane area with roads parking and restrooms. Deed delivery completed this week and work to begin promptly, with Corbin Davies and McManon on the board, now short of two members from the school board.

Boy Dies After Bike Accident on Route 18
Raymond Spaulding 15 of Litchfield RD was killed when his bicycle collided with a car westbound on Route 18 near his home. Sheriff coroner attributed death to a token neck. Sherwin Birshrant of Pontiac Michigan drove the other car but could not avoid the impact. He is survived by parents a brother Ronald sister Louise and grandmother Marie Roth. Funeral services set for Saturday at 2 pm EDST at Longacre McCarthy Funeral Home. Burial in Penfield.
