In Uniontown Pennsylvania on January 26 the HC Frick Coke Company mine at Gates suffered a fatal explosion. Ten miners entombed were recovered by 3:30 am with six bodies found by rescuers at 6 am and four more later. The mine employed about 300 workers and was wrecked by the blast.
