Sohio shows $201.4 million quarter profits up 70 percent from a year earlier while six month earnings reach $368.9 million, driven by North Slope crude and the Trans Alaska Pipeline. Amoco and Exxon report gains, with plans to raise gasoline prices 5 to 6 cents a gallon to stay competitive.
Gilford Instrument Laboratories plans to meet with Lorain County Economic and Industrial Development Corp to apply for 4 million in industrial revenue bond financing. The funds would cover 25 million for machinery and 15 million for a potential 40 000 to 50 000 square foot building addition aiming to create 75 to 100 jobs over three years. Smiley notes a 12 to 18 month decision on the addition, with some first phase funds needed soon.
Marilyn Jankowski, 28, of LaGrange, a clerk at Village Sweet Shop in Grafton, was stabbed twice by a teen robber who tied up the cash, stole $47, and fled on a bicycle. She underwent heart surgery after arriving at Elyria Memorial Hospital in deep shock. The assailant, described as a slight teen with a blue cap, escaped.

A May environmental report on Elyria’s 28 million bridge project identified a mole salamander near the site as possibly endangered. Biologist Roger Troutman says he is 95 percent sure the salamander is a hybrid of small mouthed and blue spotted varieties, not the endangered form, though a final decision awaits.
