Lorain County Wheat Harvest Reaches Record Quality
Lorain County wheat shows exceptional quality and high yields this year, despite fog and humidity slowing harvest. Carloads from the Farm Bureau Co-Op faced about five cents dockage per bushel for moisture over 14 percent, with prices fluctuating from 1.67 to 1.73 dollars. Oats and corn yields are outstanding in places, while hay harvesting progresses and truck lines flood elevators across Norwalk and nearby towns.

At a city hall finance committee meeting last night, chairman Dale Kellogg proposed either transferring about $5,000 from the $25,000 Contract and Construction Account in the Highway Fund for immediate street work or laying off four or five street department employees for the rest of the year to free salary savings.

Street department funds under review for repairs and layoffs
Kellogg and Schultz weigh transferring 5 000 from the 25 000 street repair fund to buy materials while considering 20 000 of repair money for current improvements. They note 90 000 in the street salary fund, monthly salaries around 68 514 000. The levy adds 112 000 for paving yet unimproved streets lack coverage. Cirgliani left early. Lotko says material access is limited and cooperation from dealers is slim.

The city utilities committee plans a second meeting with Ohio Fuel Gas Co to discuss a proposed 16 percent rate hike over five years. Councilman Ciright pressed for profit figures and deemed the current return insufficient. If approved, the average monthly bill for 19 000 cubic feet would rise from 1.74 to about 15.55 in year one, with further increases in subsequent years. Committee members Robinson and Cirigliano supported a multi-year contract length. This week’s motorcade proceeds from Sixth Street to Avon, Avon Lake and Lorain with a goal of over ten cars.
