Virtual petting zoos bring Washington's Capitol to touch
Washington features hands on displays at the National Building Museum and a touchable Capitol model to aid blind visitors and general learning. The 10 year old exhibit Washington City and Symbol will reopen in fall 2002 with new gadgets including movable city models recalling the 1791 plan. A four foot Monument model and a historic post will be kept. The plan supports accessible public facilities and uses tactile aids to explain the Capitol. The National Symphony Orchestra also hosts Mini Instrument Petting Zoos at concerts to let children try instruments, supported by the Women's Committee housing about 200 instruments.
