Explosion rocks Kansas U riot site in Lawrence

A blast near the University of Kansas campus damaged a Credit Bureau wall and shattered nearby windows as clashes between police and youths continued. No injuries were reported. Gov. Docking ordered a state of emergency and patrol reinforcements while Atty. Gen. Frizzell ordered a full B I investigation into the death of Harry Rice, 18, the slain student.

U S planes strike back at attackers in North Vietnam

American fighter bombers hit antiaircraft guns inside North Vietnam sixty five miles from the border after a North Vietnamese gunner fire on an unarmed U S reconnaissance jet. The attack marked the first U S strike in nearly a month with no damage reported to the chasing Phantoms. Ten Americans killed and fifty six wounded in the past 24 hours as heavy fighting continued near Hue and the Laotian border.

Viet namese police foil American hijack attempt

An unidentified American, believed to be a serviceman, tried to hijack an Air Vietnam DC 4 to Hong Kong at Saigon’s Tan Son Nhut airport. He threatened crew with two knives, surrendered after a two hour stand off. Six crewmen wounded, eight enemies dead. Passengers were allowed to disembark. The hijacker had boarded at Pleiku with 63 passengers. Two helicopters were shot down during attempted reinforcements. In Cambodia, an attack on a highway garrison near Phnom Penh threatened Kim Rom plateau and oil supplies. fighting continued with air drops to Kiri Rom and mortars and light artillery used by defenders.

Crash Kills 5 Month Old in Lorain County Collision

A 5 month old girl, Barbara Jean Billington of Lorain, died after a collision with a lumber truck on Oberlin Road and Route 113 west of Elyria. Her parents James and Kathy Billington were injured but survived. The crash occurred after 1 p.m. when their car failed to yield at a stop sign, striking the truck owned by Sliman Lumber Co. and driven by Samuel Sliman.

Becky Downgraded as Storm Becomes Tropical Over Florida Panhandle

Tropical storm Becky made landfall in the Florida panhandle with winds near 75 mph as it weakened from a minimal hurricane. Heavy rain to eight inches possible, flood warnings loom, and a tornado was reported near Panacea with one incident causing three house damages. Tourist areas emptied while some residents stayed.

Spencer Major Receives Second Distinguished Flying Cross

Spencer Spencer, a U S Air Force major from Spencer, received his second DFC for a Sept 10 1969 close air support mission in Vietnam. He saved two downed pilots and civilians amid heavy anti-aircraft fire while serving as a forward air controller. He previously earned the Air Force Cross and other honors.
