Constellation Preview Promises Postwar Air Travel Reach
In Burbank the Lockheed Constellation, adapted by the Army, is shown as a postwar airliner. Hans A Hughes sketched it in 1939 for Transcontinental and Western Airlines. The pressurized cabin enables 30,000 foot comfort and near weatherless flights. It will carry 57 passengers and crew of seven from Los Angeles to New York in under 10 hours, London from Washington in about 12, and Tokyo in 28 hours, following great-circle routes with few overnight stops. The ship features longer wings and more power than the DC-3, and aims for rapid crosscontinental and international service once war ends.
