Berlin reports a government spokesman says Germany anticipates a peaceful, months rather than years, solution to the Danzig issue and will not seek war. He stresses readiness only defensive and renews demand for Danzig to return to the Reich, noting the recent frontier shooting is now liquidated.
President Roosevelt warned at a Hyde Park press conference that the Senate’s refusal to act on neutrality this session has killed off a “nice little business boom” and will have adverse effects until January. He urged Senate accountability and noted business uncertainty over future neutrality legislation.

A 36 foot strand annealing furnace for continuous wire, built at Manufacturers and Fabricators Inc in Elyria, left for Monessen Pennsylvania to be used by Pittsburgh Steel Company. It is the first furnace of this type made by the company and one of Elyria’s newest industrial ventures.
The appellate court enjoined Lorain City and the Lorain Park Board from contracting with Peter Steris for park concessions in Lorain. The decision found the concession effectively a lease require an authorized ordinance which the city had not enacted. Judge D A Cook had denied an injunction on May 16.
A blaze in Walnut Hills Cincinnati caused 15000 dollars in damage to a cafe barbershop cleaning shop and a grocery. Two firefighters received minor cuts and bruises Anthony Cianciolo and Captain Charles Yuellig were named.

Arab rebels who kidnapped missionary Gerould R. Goldner of Akron Ohio have cut the ransom from 5000 to 1000 dollars. A Bethlehem envoy reported the reduction after negotiations. Goldner’s donkey boy arrived Bethlehem with a note from Goldner saying he was well and hopes to hear from his family.
Tokyo reports police foiled an assassination plot against three top Japanese figures Count Manino Lord Keener Yuasa and Viscount Yoshitami Matsudaira. Officers arrested three plotters on July 15 finding incriminating documents and bombs at their homes. Names withheld. The case linked to reactionary anti British sentiment circles.
The Hatch clean politics bill clears the House after late night maneuvers and goes to President Roosevelt. It bans most federal employees from political activity, potentially crippling national party operations and prompting immediate court tests if signed.
The House delegation voted 21 to 1 for the Hatch bill to outlaw political activity by federal officials and employees. Rep. Michael J. Kirwan was the sole dissenter. Names from both parties and districts are listed, including Harter among the Democrats voting for the measure.
Traffic on West avenue from Fourth to Ninth streets will be closed until Monday due to resurfacing. West avenue from Broad to Fourth will reopen tomorrow morning. East avenue work starts next week if weather allows. Fourth street bridge remains closed Monday to Wednesday and traffic diverts to Broad street.
Frank Piccolo a 49 year old former gangster released after eight years for murder was killed by a shotgun blast in South Philadelphia while on a driving lesson. Police linked the slaying to ongoing gang warfare tied to Willie Lanzetti and the district’s prohibition era figures.
The WPA said strikes against abolishing prevailing wages for skilled WPA workers are nearly over. Commissioner Harrington warned that laying off 30,000 relief workers before Sept 1 will cripple WPA operations. Senators O Mahoney and Maloney urged relief act amendments to avert further unrest and suffering.
Three Marion residents were seriously injured when a vehicle driven by Carl Failes struck the rear of a farm wagon on Route 23, one mile south of Marion. Injured were Jesse Boyd 55 Gene Johnson 15 and James Walters. They were taken to a hospital with severe head injuries and body cuts.
