County panel eyes housing study in Lorain County

The Lorain County Regional Planning Commission began an intensive housing study led by a committee of civic, building, labor and financial groups. More than 25 members have been appointed by president Richard Dunn. a chairman and additional members will follow. The study aims to provide basic housing data and is expected to take at least a year.

Meany led AFL-CIO on fence over 1972 vote neutrality

George Meany maintained AFL CIO neutrality in the presidential race after a 27-3 executive council vote. He refused to endorse McGovern or Nixon, stressing that the federation’s 117 unions and 13.6 million members remain free to choose. The split underscored internal divisions and Meany’s enduring influence in labor politics.

Viet Cong denounces U S cease fire bid at Paris talks

In Paris the Viet Cong and North Vietnamese negotiators rejected the U S plan for a separate cease fire and political settlement, saying progress stalled. Porter urged calm discussion and a clear view of Nixon's May 8 proposals, while Binh marked the 18th anniversary of the 1954 Geneva accord and called for unity and sovereignty.

Floods in Manila Kill 197. Half Million Homeless

UPI reports floods across the Philippines leave more than 197 dead and over 500,000 homeless or stranded in Central Luzon. Manila is heavily submerged, with water depths reaching up to ten feet in places. Evacuations include 50 centers for about 14,000 people as President Marcos orders all available watercraft for rescue efforts.

Lorain man 21 drowns off east breakwall pier

A 21 year old Lorain man Walter Davis of 917 De Witt Street drowned in Lake Erie about 21 feet deep near the east breakwall after developing a cramp while swimming with companion Larry Battles. Divers recovered his body and he was pronounced dead on arrival at St Joseph Hospital at 7 05 p m. Police, firemen, Coast Guardsmen and sheriff divers assisted with the search and recovery.

Vermilion Woman Killed in Darrow Road Collision

A 30 year old Vermilion woman Rose M Costilow of Furnace Road died after her eastbound car crossed left of center and struck a westbound car driven by Joseph Galvan 29 of Wakeman on Darrow Road near Route 60. Galvan was hospitalized for facial cuts and a possible fractured foot after being freed by rescue crews.

Cleveland planner to propose seven-county tax sharing plan

Cleveland City Planning Director Norman Krumholz will propose a real estate tax sharing program across seven counties in the Cleveland area including Lorain County. He notes there will be areas where cooperation is feasible and Lorain County will be involved.

Weather Worsens as Humid Skies Bring Tstorms Near Lake Erie

Lorain County Night at Blossom Center Tickets Filling Fast

Ticket orders are already flooding in for the third annual Lorain County Night at Blossom Center on August 24. Amherst Rotary Club leads with 90 requests, others from Elyria Lorain Oberlin Columbia Station North Ridgeville and Sheffield Lake. The event features the Jimany Dorsey Orchestra with Helen O Connell and Bob Eberly and benefits the Lorain Deaming Arts Council. Bus travel at 3 dollars is promoted and reservations are available on Page D 2.
