Ohio tightens penalties for drunken drivers under new law

Governor signs six laws aimed at safety and state cost control. Habitual drunken drivers face felony charges with 60 day local jail terms and 10 000 fines for a fourth offense and six to 18 months in state prison for a fifth offense. Inmates face reduced rights and penalties for frivolous lawsuits. The package also includes maternity and turnpike measures with 90 day enactment.

Trooper fined and warned for off duty speeding

Shane Johnson a 25 year old trooper from Bowling Green pleaded no contest to driving 73 mph in a 55 mph zone at Haskins on May 25 after a prior 80 mph ticket on U.S. 23 in Wyandot County. Patrol spokesman Sgt John Born said troopers speeding is not tolerated and cited crashes as a major concern.

Fireworks fire suspect ordered to pay for defense

Lawrence County judge ruled 24 year old Todd Hall must cover his legal bills after finding him not indigent for the Ohio Fireworks blaze in Scottown that killed nine. Hall faces eight counts of involuntary manslaughter. a ninth count could be added after a grand jury meeting Aug. 5. Hall is held on 500000 bond. court may reimburse defense time at up to 40 dollars out of court and 50 dollars in court.
