U.S. readying troops to keep mail moving
With a nationwide mail strike looming, the Pentagon says it will deploy Army troops to maintain mail service if ordered. Postal unions accuse the Postal Service of engineering a bargaining crisis as Postmaster General Bolger warns workers they may lose jobs, pay, and benefits if they strike. The Federal Mediation Service reports progress but notes remaining difficult issues two days before the deadline. Army readiness hinges on a presidential emergency declaration and service request.

Avon funds missing prompt prosecution urged
The Concerned Citizens of Avon urged prosecution for missing Avon funds in a letter to area newspapers. Stanley Wolfe cited at least 10 000 and up to 40 000 dollars collected by Mayor Donald Hubbard from 1972 to 1977 that disappeared after reaching city funds. The group alleges officials knew of improper money actions but did not intervene. State auditors planned to complete an audit in about a month. Nelson Summitt and William P Hall served as Avon finance director during the period. Summitt declined to comment while Hall said he was shocked and unaware of the losses.
