Poor Combine Adjustment Will Cost Grain Loss
Ohio farmers may lose up to 2 percent of their harvest due to poor combine adjustment. Ohio State University extension suggests checking losses after harvest by counting kernels in a 50 square foot area, using rack and cylinder losses, and noting that 20 wheat kernels per square foot equals one bushel per acre. Cutterbar losses are typically the largest, and in a 30 bushel per acre stand, cutterbar loss is about one sixth to one seventh of a bushel. For guidance, readers can obtain the HARVESTING WITH COMBINES leaflet at county extension offices.
