Nine passengers and 40 crewmen leaped from the burning Black Gull off Long Island. Four were missing and feared drowned. Gripsholm rescued 45 survivors and transferred 44 to the Mackinac for treatment. Coast Guard widened the search as daylight approached.
A fire at the Electro Alloys Division plant of the American Brake Shoe Co on Taylor Street at Abbe Road damaged moulds, molding machinery, patterns and wiring after sparks from a welding torch ignited wood flour bags. Quad Co One and Engine Co Two fought the blaze for over two hours, laying 800 feet of hose. alarm at 6 28 p.m. No injuries reported.
Lorain County Excavating Company awarded the Hawthorne Longfellow storm sewer project for 26792.70 by Safety Director D. W. Rothe. The job covers sewers on Hawthorne and Longfellow between Sycamore and Poplar. Six bids were submitted. the winning bid was the second lowest. Construction to begin next week.
Mrs. Emlie Alice Black of Griffithsville West Virginia dies at age 104 after a long life rooted in Gallipolis Ohio. She left 276 descendants including five daughters two sons 130 grandchildren 90 great grandchildren and 49 great great grandchildren. About 50 other direct descendants have died.
