London readers learn Britain will take years in the 1950s to complete paying wartime pensions to wounded survivors and families of the dead. About 12,000 veterans remain in hospitals, with 24 outpatient clinics still operating, as pensioners decline from a peak of 3,365,000 in 1921 to under 1,200,000 today.

Soldier Shot While Escaping at Columbus Army Post

Private Leo J. McDonald, 32, wounded while attempting to escape from the army reservation, may live according to the post hospital. Sergeant Boyce Stanton fired when McDonald broke loose during transport to the guardhouse. McDonald was on military parole pending trial for a felony and reportedly took a civilian automobile to Bucyrus two weeks earlier.

Former Big League Ball Player Fatally Injured

Howard Freigan, Ohio Wesleyan graduate and former National and American Associations player, was killed while diving into a pool in Chattanooga Tennessee. He played for the Knoxville team in the Southern Association this season and his body was being returned to Dayton Ohio for burial.

West Ridge 4-H Sewing Club Holds Joint Meeting

Misses Margaret and Mildred Pallas entertained the Sr. and Jr. Sewing 4-H Clubs of West Ridge on Thursday afternoon. Marguerite Streicher, president of the Sr. Club, presided as the pledge was given.

Community club meetings share craft demo and fellowship

Minutes of a previous gathering note a demonstration contest and garment judging led by Mrs. Eldred while the Jr. Club met in another room under Thelma Wagner. The women discussed material and color, judged finished articles, and Miss Bird joined to show bound buttonholes and edging. A social hour followed with refreshments for many members and guests. Janet Baus of Murray Ridge will entertain the Senior club on July 21. Nearby families enjoyed a church gathering with games and music for nearly 200 guests at St. Pauls Elyria and neighboring parishes.
