Twenty two African nations and Iraq pulled out of the Olympics amid last minute protests, depriving the Games of top competitors. State Auditor Thomas E B Ferguson agreed to audit alleged payroll padding at the Oberlin garage of the Ohio Department of Transportation after a grand jury indictment. The probe targets Corcoran and Skolnicki with charges related to padding payroll and improper use of state time, tied to repairs and personal tasks.
Ford swept 35 Connecticut delegates and Reagan won 20 in Utah leaving Ford with 1,098 UP I delegates and Reagan at 1,062. With 99 uncommitted delegates the race could hinge on a handful. Reagan predicted victory on the first ballot at the Kansas City convention starting August 16.
