Sixty-one men, including 37 Elyrians, will receive notices to report for pre-induction physical exams. The Elyria Local Board No 72 selected the group to fill the first 59 men scheduled for exams on August 8 and 15. All are 1-A and aged 23 to 25.
John Stacy a 43 year old Toledo truck driver pleaded not guilty to a second degree manslaughter charge after a Route 10 collision near Fields Corners that killed James Fisher of Fremont and injured two others. Judge D A Cook granted probation today after Stacy was arrested by deputy sheriffs following the crash involving two cars and the truck.
The forecast for northeastern Ohio calls for fair skies and cooler conditions this afternoon and tonight with a low around 60. Tomorrow Wednesday remains fair and mild with a high near 90. Market notes mention a page two item.
The Elyria city council tabled until August 7 two ordinances committing up to 70000 for state highway improvements on Route 20 from 16th Street to the city limits and on Route 57. Finance Chairman Kenneth Lord urged delaying to confirm city costs, possible bond funding, and to avoid a blank check while state plans remain sketchy. Local chamber and labor representatives urged proceeding, citing safety and economic need, with concern over state deadline and changing census-based cost shares.
President Truman prepared a formal message to Congress on the Korean war with a nationwide broadcast planned for tomorrow night. Key proposals include new defense spending of 5 to 8 billion dollars, voluntary controls on materials, possible new powers over credit and speculation, and potential excess profits taxes but no immediate tax recommendations.
Reverend Davis O. McCamy of the First United Presbyterian Church urged the council to oppose a liquor club at 111 Cedar Street, within 500 feet of the church. John A. Spitzer seeks to relocate his night club permit from 605 Cleveland Street to Cedar Street, with a state hearing having been held. The issue was referred to committee for a report at the next meeting.
Announcement states union 996 UAW CIO and Manufacturers and Fabricators Inc have reached a collective bargaining agreement pending ratification by members. Terms include continuation of union shop and check off, improved vacation plan, six paid holidays and an average pay increase of six cents per hour effective July 1.
Mr and Mrs Anthony Panzica of Cleveland were killed when their car hit a truck near Grand Junction Iowa. Their two children Lucille 20 and Nancy were seriously injured and the truck driver also suffered serious injuries. The Panzicas were said to be en route to Arizona.
Price boosts and hoarding reports raise the prospect of rationing and price controls. Senate Banking chair Burnet Maybank plans to convene Thursday to investigate outrages in pricing and will consider proposals tied to President Truman's Korea War message. Futures rise in chemicals and metals, sugar and grain climb as inflation talk and potential controls loom. Macy’s urges sav ings bonds to curb hoarding.
The Elyria city council unanimously denied a request from Earl E. Smith to furnish water to a Lake Avenue district allotment outside the city. The committee report argued extending services outside the city limits would hinder growth, signaling a future policy against non municipal service extensions.
City council approved the 1951 budget with general fund requests totaling 758 557 and overall funds amounting to 1 649 005. A public hearing was set for 7 p m before the regular session, but attendance was light.
American air forces over the Sea of Japan launched jets to disrupt North Korean air activity after Reds previously held air superiority. US pilots claimed success destroying tanks trucks bridges and a tunnel while Red Yak fighters retreated. President Truman ordered air support for South Korea as the air war escalated.
Military graveside services were held at Pinelawn cemetery Long Island N Y for S Sgt W M Clark formerly of Elyria killed in action over Stuttgart Germany on March 19 1945. He was a radar operator on a B 34 on his 31st mission. Initial reports had him missing then dead. His dog tag and pilot Capt Ritter's were recovered proving the demise. Clark son of W N Clark and his former wife resided on Marseilles Avenue in Elyria. He was nephew of C G Chuck Clark of Emerich apartments Beer and Wine Free Delivery. Marsh Guenin adv.
Allied air forces pressed the ground war near Taejon as U S and Australian planes damaged tanks and trucks and bombed bridges. Reports said Taejon was largely deserted as U S forces withdrew, while a turning point hint suggested allies may shift from defense to offense.
A U S military spokesman reported that American and South Korean forces are holding the line along Korea’s front with enemy pressure slackening. He cautioned that a turning point in the war could not be claimed, noting a build up with artillery and air support across the Kongju to Yongju line.
The Elyria Board of Education rejected bids at noon for the Franklin School building and for revamping the heating system at the high school. New bids will be opened Thursday, Aug. 24 at noon. The board granted superintendent Lynn Nicholas a pay raise from 7300 to 8500 a year for the remaining two years of his contract.
