Western Ohio Sees Rising Alfalfa Seed Interest

Western Ohio reports increased interest in alfalfa seed production with OSU agronomy staff fielding queries on harvest and handling. Since commercial seed production began around 1930 yields range from one-half to six bushels per field, averaging two to three. Varieties perform better than common alfalfas, and leaving the second growth for seed boosts quality. Three-fourths of pods should be brownish black at harvest, and thin stands with good sunshine and limited rain favor seed production. Proper harvesting gear and prompt curing and storage prevent rain damage as seed adapts to Ohio farms over generations.
