Frederick H. Schurdell Sr. 92 Berea resident dies

Frederick H. Schurdell Sr., 92, of Berea and formerly Olmsted Township, died Sunday at Northwestern Healthcare Center. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps in World War II and retired from the Pattern Shop at Ford in Brook Park. Survivors include sons Ernest, Frederick Jr., and Edward, plus 12 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. Oberlin acquires LaFontant-Mankarious papers collection

The 1981 to 1986 papers of LaFontant-Mankarious were donated to Oberlin College after her 1997 death. Archivists, led by Melissa Gottwald, organized about 14 weeks of work including chronology, preservation checks, and a biographical sketch. The collection, alongside Car T. Rowan’s papers, highlights early discrimination faced by LaFontant-Mankarious and professional progress in law. The Oberlin College Archives, in Mudd Center, welcomes researchers weekdays mornings and afternoons.

Budget cuts hit Lorain and Elyria libraries and counties

The Lorain Elyria public library system faces a $65 820 cut shrinking annual funding from 2.87 million to 2.8 million. State funds make up about 93 percent of the budget prompting belt tightening and possible fewer new books DVDs and videos. Lorain and Elyria also lose county funding with Lorain down 43 704 and Elyria 27 517 this year. The state further trims indigent defense reimbursements from 47 percent in 2001 to 42 percent in 2002 and 40 percent in 2003.

Dust from C14 dust clouds near Dashiell house

Residents report thick dust clouds drifting from a nearby site near Dashiell’s house along Route 3. One observer could not see beyond 20 feet and noted the dust remained deep despite cleanup efforts. Explosion damages dollhouse near Chestnut Ridge Road

At about 1 a.m. Saturday a blast ripped a dollhouse near Chestnut Ridge Road, leaving a gaping roof hole and a blown-out back wall. A man, possibly 18, allegedly exited a car, entered the house, then fled as the explosion occurred seconds after he reentered the vehicle. Debris scattered into nearby yards as neighbors watched in shock. Police could not provide information Monday.

Brother Brawl Leaves Man Injured in Domestic Dispute
