Congress told why oil costs jumped 53 percent
Washington reports seven oil companies will testify before Senate and Commerce subcommittees on why gasoline prices rose 53 percent in two years amid claims of manufactured shortages. Federal Energy Administrator Frank G. Zarb cited low inventories and potential two to five cent hikes through Labor Day, with forecasts of a new price record. The Senate also moved energy legislation and offshore development funding while Park Ohio Industries plans up to 100 natural gas wells to safeguard Park Drop Forge jobs.

Canada to Cut Export of Natural Gas to U S
Ottawa plans to reduce natural gas exports to the United States while ensuring border areas with no alternative energy supply are not left without heat. Energy Minister Donald Macdonald says cuts will be negotiated with the U S and western provinces, with the export level fixed after talks. Canadian exports amount to about one trillion cubic feet annually, about 45 percent of Canadian production and 4.5 percent of U S demand. A U S industry source warned the impact could be tremendous in border states and the Northeast dependent on Canadian gas. The move follows a National Energy Board report forecasting possible Canadian gas shortages next winter and a 60.6 trillion foot reserve base, equating to under 30 years of supply at current use. Oil exports to the U S are being reduced and will end by 1982 unless more Canadian oil becomes available. a total gas export cutoff is deemed unfeasible due to some U S markets’ dependence on Canadian supplies.
