Mary Flack describes the YW Summer Play Day Camp for girls aged eight to twelve. The program runs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays with swimming, dramatics, crafts, games and a midday lunch. Ten groups, led by teen counselors including Jo Daugherty, run daily activities from 9:30 a.m. to July 25 in Helly Hall and the YMCA facilities.
Elyria area junior and senior high and college women supervise the YWCA Play Day camp. Counselors include Elyria High School Y-Teens Billie Jean Howell, Nancy Williams, Susan Dudley, Dian Sadler, Gail Murphy, Marion Cheesman, and juniors Marilyn Von Valkenburg, Gail Dumke, Phyllis Murphy, Molly Barr, Judy Garrard, Sue Schilling, Joyce Komko, Shirley Weinstein. Sophomore Judy Manson will enter Wooster College. Mary Jane Wagner has completed two years at Ohio State University. Volunteers, led by chairwoman Mrs. William Grant and assistants Mrs. Harry Becker, Mrs. Robert Butz, Mrs. George Krogier, Mrs. Howard Pick, and Mrs. Stuart Hawthorne, help plan and fund the program with cooperating adult YW clubs. Activities include hikes, a Doll Hospital talk, newspaper mechanics tour, a trip to Cleveland Hopkins Airport, and a final program at the Methodist Home. The 22nd YWCA summer Play Day attracts many participants and counselors, daughters of women who attended the first Stay-At-Home Camps.
Mrs. Thomas Meyers hosted a surprise pink and blue shower for Mrs. Charles Hoagland and Mrs. Chester McVeen before a six week Seattle visit. Corsages of rattles and roses were given, with Tayettes at supper. guests included Mrs. Willard Harvey and others from Brentwood Village and Elyria.
Nadine Isaac, former Belgium women’s tennis champion, now studies plutonium chemistry at Argonne National Laboratory under a grant through 1958. The Brussels alumna arrived in the U.S. after winning at her university and plans to apply fuel-reprocessing knowledge back home in Belgium.
