4000 Now Jobless as U S Steel Cuts at Lorain Plant
U S Steel Lorain Cuyahoga works will shed 300 more jobs and furlough 300, bringing total unemployed to over 4,000 as a round of layoffs spreads. Indefinite layoffs already affect 3,700, with a further 300 on one week furlough, marking nearly half the plant's 8,600 peak workforce. A halted $70 million continuous caster project deepens the trouble amid weak demand for seamless pipe used in oil.
