In Elyria, commissioners Vass and Ross voted to fire human resources director James Cordes after a closed executive session held during a Thursday meeting. Betty Blair criticized the process as she was excluded from key discussions and later allowed to vote on the record.
Debbi and Greg Vrona spent three days watching their tiger cat named Flash slowly descend from a neighbor’s tree. The 9 month old cat, adopted two weeks earlier, finally came down this morning after being stuck since Saturday. Stephanie, the family’s 38 year old daughter, had given the cat its name.
Elyria officials have not decided whether to appeal a judge order to reinstate two officers, Garrett Longacre and Richard Walker, who were fired for excessive force in 1997. The judge ordered immediate reinstatement and back pay. The officers met with the police chief but have not returned to duty. city and solicitor consider a stay if appealed.
Elyria High School assistant principal Douglas Solet, 30, resigned July 9 to take an administrator post with Put-in-Bay Schools, effective July 30. He is under police investigation, though no charges have been filed, and his destination remains unconfirmed. Solet has long served Elyria Schools and is a 1980 Elyria High graduate.
State Highway Patrol charged Jamie Waddell a 19 year old Vermilion with aggravated vehicular assault driving under the influence failure to yield backing out of a driveway and underage drinking after a two vehicle crash near Gifford Road and US 20. Nicole Haymond 19 Oberlin was stable at MetroHealth Medical Center along with six other teen victims.
