Indian Ocean Declared Whale Sanctuary by 23 Nations
The International Whaling Commission voted 16 to 3 with 4 abstentions to make the Indian Ocean a ten year sanctuary and trim next year’s total whale kill to about 15,000. Japan, South Korea and the Soviet Union opposed the sanctuary while a worldwide sperm whale moratorium failed. Bowhead quotas were set at 26 struck, 18 landed after debate.

Panel axes throwaway ban for beverage cans nationwide
The Resource Conservation Committee refused to back a nationwide ban on disposable beer and soft drink cans and bottles. It urged deposit laws to save energy and reduce waste but cited uncertain price and labor impacts. The panel also rejected a national litter tax as ineffective for environmental cleanup.

Lucky man survives Matterhorn fall
U S Army Captain Stephen Rombouts survived a 330 foot fall on the Matterhorn near Zermatt while climbing alone. He tumbled down the east face, bounced across a glacier and over rocks before coming to a stop. Rescuers hailed his survival as an absolute miracle and he was hospitalized in shock.
