Lorain County residents are examined in the 1970 census numbers with focus on SMSA boundaries. Tract 602 shows 4715 residents, 11.4 percent black and 15.8 years average education for those over 25. The report notes housing, income, mobility, and language breakdowns.
In a pageant with many regional titleholders, Susan Thies of Ashland College won the swimsuit award in preliminaries and Karen Sparka of Bowling Green State University won the talent title. Finals and the crowning of Miss Ohio occur tomorrow night with judges and audience anticipations high.

U S and South Vietnamese pilots adapt to the SA7 Strela shoulder fired missile as multiple helicopters and planes are shot down since May. Low level flying and decoy flares become common while strikes shift to avoid the weapon’s range near An Loc and Highway 13.
The Strela system uses an infrared homing device attracted to engine heat and carries a high explosive warhead. It has shown strong effectiveness, especially against aircraft engines in combat contexts.
Secretary of State Ted W. Brown said the November election in Ohio will produce the heaviest balloting in state history. He noted that national party conventions signal the fall campaign is near and that boards of elections and the secretary of state's office have been preparing accordingly.
Lorain County Sheriff Vernon M. Smith urged harsher penalties for gun violence rather than new laws. He said a Gallup poll shows 71 percent favor handgun controls but not a new law, and criticized Senate plans to ban cheap handguns as a flawed solution. He argued for enforcing existing laws and warned against a credibility gap.
