Mayor vows veto of altered Elyria budget

Mayor Leonard P. Reichlin warned he would veto the proposed 1971 Elyria budget if the finance committee changes were adopted by City Council. The panel erased a 248,500 deficit, cut 177,500 from highway and sanitary departments, and added 42,500 to health. A public hearing and council session will set budget approval.

Elyria School District Hints at November Levy

The 1971 Elyria budget contemplates a 76 mill operating levy in November. If approved income rises to 11,101,748. without it income falls by 1,680,012 and expenditures drop by 1,198,611. Major cuts would hit secretarial, librarian, nurse, transport, teaching payroll, and kindergarten without the levy. The budget is available for public inspection and will be published in The Chronicle Telegram.

Ship sinks in seaway killing skipper and eight missing

The Canadian freighter Eastcliffe Hall struck Chrysler Shoal on the St. Lawrence Seaway and sank with 21 aboard. Only captain Albert Groult was recovered. eight others are missing and presumed dead. Twelve crewmen were rescued and hospitalized in Ontario. the ship carried pig iron bound for Saginaw, Michigan.

Mail bank theft suspect returned to Lorain jail

Joseph Diorio thirty of Youngstown was returned to Lorain County jail awaiting arraignment on larceny by trick charges in the $93,000 theft from the Midway Mail branch of Lorain County Savings and Trust Bank on August sixteenth, 1968. Coates Grisham and Drago were named in related indictments. Drago remains at large. Coates Grisham posted bonds.
