Federal data show states with stricter gun laws report lower firearm homicide rates. The Lorain County sheriff's deputy is featured in "Mai Behind the Badge" on page 13.
Secretary of Defense Clark M. Clifford, en route to South Vietnam, accused North Vietnam of a substantial buildup of men and material in Saigon and Saigon area. Intelligence reports said six enemy divisions could strike next week affecting Saigon, Hanoi and the Paris talks dynamic. Clifford underscored reciprocal restraint as a condition for any cease fire and outlined forthcoming meetings with Thieu and Bunker in Honolulu.
Police chased 22 year old Anthony Ferrari after a violent daylight shooting on a Lakewood street left Bonnie Ferrari dead and George Lipp Jr critically wounded. Witnesses described Ferrari firing from a rifle during a confrontation over divorce and custody.
Manila report says actor Jess Lapid was killed by gunmen inside a Manila nightclub after 2:30 a.m. witnesses note a sign urging firearms deposit at entry. The incident follows a spate of killings claiming public figures and officers as the crime wave prompts vows for tougher gun controls and police powers.

A head on train crash two miles from Medina del Campo leaves eight dead and 60 railroad officials injured. The collision occurred about 150 miles northwest of Madrid with many treated for minor injuries.
Police report a white car driven through Central Park and rose garden in Lorain overnight. The vehicle, found parked in front of a Lexington Avenue tavern with rose petals in the grill, is held for further investigation after patrons said they did not own it.
UPI reports a U.S. motion seeks North Korea payout and an apology by late August for releasing the U S S Pueblo crew of 82 survivors. The vessel was seized January 23 in Korean waters by patrol boats with jet support. three men were aboard, one later died. Secretary Rusk to join President Johnson for a Honolulu conference with South Vietnamese President Thieu.
In Hamilton Montana UPI reports Harry Boozer heads the Prohibition Party list of presidential electors on the Montana ballot. Boozer is named as the top elector in the party ticket.
Customs officials stopped Maria Aveling Gonzales de Rossi, 78, and Melida Lucia Burguene Mamnardi, 46, as two Argentine couriers smuggling heroin worth about four million dollars. Each wore nine one pound bags taped to their bodies, carrying a total of eighteen pounds. Both face $100,000 bail and up to 20 years in jail if convicted.
