J N Eidt announces the State highway department will widen Route 57 from Elyria to Lorain to 22 feet with two eleven foot lanes and banked curves. Construction starts early August and lasts about five weeks with one way traffic during work. Elyria council to authorize widening within city limits.
In Cleveland on July 13 Sheriff O Donnell waited for chemical test results on blood stains found at Frank Dolezal s home. The defense claimed Dolezal showed injuries from beating while a priest said he was not abused and suggested injuries came from a fall in his cell.
Federal Judge Charles Woodward dismissed the government anti monopoly case against the Midwest Milk Industry. He sustained demurrers to indictments by 43 individuals and 14 corporations. The justice department had charged conspiracy to violate the Peeping Act by fixing prices and suppressing competition.
The disturbance extends from Ontario southward over the Lake region and Ohio Valley. The principal high extends from Alberta over the northern Rocky Mountains with a ridge southeast over the Gulf and South Atlantic States. Showers reported in Ontario Florida and Texas. Otherwise, fair weather. Cooler in the Northern Rocky Mountains and Upper Missouri Valley. Warmer in the Lake region and Ohio Valley.
County officials, the Common Pleas Judge, and bar members discussed Edward Morrison’s proposal to remove the 90 ton 70 foot dome and repair the roof for under 1500 dollars citing danger from vibration and heavy records. Morrison claimed the Goddess weighs 2 1 2 tons and the dome shakes with trains nearby. Davisom and Butler to decide next steps.
Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain announced in the House of Commons the call up of 12,000 retired naval officers and reservists for August and September fleet exercises. County commissioners vote to issue 91500 of relief notes payable from special excise taxes. Bids for sale to be opened July 25. Notes serially issued and redeemed by March 1943. Funds will match state relief money and finance relief in Loraine County through year end.
Los Angeles authorities declare emergency to halt an outbreak of infantile paralysis spanning multiple parts of Los Angeles County. Superintendent Everett J. Gray reports 30 cases under treatment as a $500000 emergency fund is placed at his disposal to prevent a repeat of the 1934-35 epidemic.
Cincinnati coroner reports Carl Sanders Jr. age 9 died from heat exhaustion after a day of swimming. He returned home exhausted and did not eat dinner, authorities said.
Fred Burnett aged 55 of Detroit died in the Conneaut city jail several hours after being found ill on a street. Acting health commissioner Dr. John Moury said the death was caused by heat illness amid hot weather.
Prof Walter B Pitkin’s proposed middle class movement, started June 29, is being shaped for Lorain County. A committee of 37 Elyria Lorain County leaders will receive detailed printed material next week after J E Neuger of the Pitkin group reports the plan is being prepared. He will visit Elyria early next week to meet the committee as they await further information from New York. The committee, formed at the June 29 session, seeks specifics before launching county wide efforts.
Washington July 13 The National Political Record reports Senate confirmation of Paul V. McNutt as director of the Federal Security Agency. He will resign as high commissioner to the Philippines, a post held since February 1937, to head the new agency and is expected to assume duties soon.
Fifty striking workers at the Fisher Body Company plant in Cleveland blocked an outgoing freight train at the Aspinwall avenue entrance. Pickets sat and stood on the New York Central tracks to demand access to the car’s contents. The car carried automobile parts bound for Janesville New York, according to side officials, who said the seal was not broken.
Washington July 13 President Roosevelt and Secretary Hull reportedly argued over the wording of a neutrality message to Congress. Roosevelt favored forceful language to push repeal of the arms embargo, while Hull warned a hard line could anger the axis and provoke Senate opposition. The plan was to send it by week’s end, unless Congress acted differently, with a possible fireside chat as alternative.
Fernand Rinfret Canadian secretary of state died today in Los Angeles from a heart attack while visiting on holiday. He was staying at the Biltmore hotel in Los Angeles when the death occurred.
Stanley Korowski 25 of Lorain bound to grand jury under 50000 bond after preliminary hearing on armed bank robbery. He claimed a $250 gambling win in a crap game in Cleveland yards funded his ride home, denying Kipton bank involvement. Local witnesses and FBI officials testified. Korowski was captured hiding near a material witness’s home.

In Detroit GM executives and UAW officials resume talks to end a week-old strike affecting 12 plants and 7500 idle workers after the union demanded a supplemental contract for tool and die makers maintenance and engineering workers.

More than fifty workers from across the nation will attend a ten day training course in Elyria starting September 8. The National Society for Crippled Children directs the program with lectures and field demonstrations in Elyria and Cleveland.
In Harlan Kentucky on July 13 National Guard reinforcements joined two machine gun units and tanks to quell violence in the coal fields. About 200 miners were arrested after a pitched battle at the Mahan Ellison mine near Stanfill nine miles southwest of Harlan. Governor Chandler denounced UMW District 19 leaders for inciting riots and ordered indictments while authorities pledged to maintain order and allow peaceful picketing.
William Green, head of the AFL, will ask President Roosevelt to restore prevailing wage rates for skilled relief workers on WPA projects. The move follows a large strike involving about 77,000 workers and 14,000 dismissals. Green will lead a committee to press the issue, with CIO support and plans to meet House Speaker Bankhead and Vice President Garner.
Corrigan known as the Wrong Way flier vanished during a flight from El Paso to San Antonio after a storm forced a landing at Dryden. He took off at 7 30 A M and had not arrived by noon, with storms and downed lines hindering search as he was en route to be married next Monday.
An 88 pound meteor fragment from a sky blaze over the Detroit area was found by Dax Solomon on his farm six miles south of Dresden Ont. Luke Smith later bought it for 4. Grace Solomon reported seeing the meteor plume as it struck. Other fragments were found nearby including on Bruce Cummings farm.
A Sandusky county grand jury indicted 23 year old Velma Fink of Clyde for first degree murder in the death of her infant son Halden. The charge was returned as of July 13 in Fremont.
