Workers Take Control Of Columbia Soup Company In Indianapolis

In Indianapolis on July 11 the Columbia Conserve Company workers, about 1590 employees, took 51 percent of the stock and control of the firm. President William P Hapgood and his brothers plan 100 percent worker ownership eventually, with wages set to workers’ needs rather than efficiency. The move follows 13 years of a Socio Industrial experiment begun in 1917, aiming at employment solutions and shared profits.
